Summer School
August 15, 2010
One Day Summer School “Free Space: the Field Guide”
by The New Trivium, Erik Boers
A management team which talks about its own moral teachers, a group of professionals who try to identify illusion they have long held, directors of health care who reflect upon the essence of their work, software developers who engage in a debate with their managers about the idea that management interferes with the professionals’ work, help desk staff who try to find the middle position in emotionally laden situations.
With many different groups and in many different ways we have been practising philosophical conversations and have developed many new forms to facilitate them. During this one day Summer School we offer a follow up on the Master Class we gave during the international conference. We will introduce some of these new forms and coach people to work with them.
A first choice: The question behind the question; Short dialogue; On the horns of a dilemma; Persuing a definition; Investigating an illusion; Contemplative dialogue; Short speech; Opposition; Sic et non ; Exercise in brevity; True or false?; Lamentation ; Ode; Personal manifesto; Unnoticed moment; Poetic argument; Moral teachers; Middle position; Interviewing your inner pilot; Atlas of values; Clearness committee; Tetractys.
We regularly organise an international Summer School (Berlin 2005, Venice 2006, Bergen The Netherlands 2008).
The Summer School is based on the English translation of our book Free Space, room to reflect: philosophy in organisations. Our aim with these courses is to make our ways of philosophising in organisations more internationally known. We have shared our experiences with people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds (Belgium, Denmark, England, Germany, Iceland, Italy). As a result of the meetings so far we established an international network of philosophers and consultants, people who want to enrich their own practice by philosophising in organisations.
The Summer School is meant to make people acquainted with our way of making philosophy work in its original environment: the marketplace. The classical liberal arts, rhetoric, dialectic and grammar – called THE TRIVIUM, provide numerous methods to stimulate genuine reflection and profound dialogues in professional communities. Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and other founders of our Western philosophical tradition prove to be inspiring role models for the enquiring consultant in our own day.
The earlier groups built up a community of enquiry gathering people from different backgrounds. The common need raised from these experiences was to engage in an international cooperative platform of philosophers/management consultants, improving their work in organizations through philosophy in practice. Each time the aim of the School is to train philosophers/consultants in the classical liberal arts and modern types of philosophical reflection-in-action.
